charges against jack johnson, the prince george's county executive. plus topper is tracking stormy weather in your forecast. and for instance george's county executive jack johnson is reacting to his arrest and his wife lesli. >> federal agents raided his home and office and then they took the couple into custody today. >> let me say that i'm innocent of these charges and i just can't wait for the facts to come out. and when they come out, i am absolutely convinced that i'm going to be -- we will be vindicated. i know the facts. and they will be revealed in a manner consistent with what i know to be the truth. >> well, tonight the truth is the outgoing executive and his wife, a newly elected council

member, are facing some very serious charges. and for that we turn to andrea mccarren. >> reporter: derek and anita, this 10 -page affidavit details the government's case against the johnsons. they are charged with tampering with a witness and evidence and destruction of records in a federal investigation. each carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. >> prince george's county executive jack johnson and his wife council women elect lesli johnson looked exhausted as they stood before a federal judge and listened to the stunning allegations. >> a real estate developer gave jack johnson currency and checks, including a check for $100,000 in return for home funds and other official assistance. >> reporter: as federal agents closed in, jack johnson allegedly called his wife at their mitchellville home and instructed her to flush that $100,000 check down the toilet. in another shocking development,

the fbi found that mrs. johnson had stashd nearly 80 -- stashed nearly $80,000 in her bra and underwear. >> no public official gets a free pass as no one is above the law. >> reporter: investigateors say this is just the tip of an iceburg in a broader ongoing investigation in prince george's county that began in 2006. more charges against more defendants are expected. >> if you have information regarding a pay to play scheme in this county or in this state, it is far better for you to talk to us now than for us to come knocking on your door. >> reporter: johnson's term as county execute was due to end on december 6th. now he faces another term. this one in federal prison. both the johnsons will be back in federal court for their pretrial hearings on december 13th at 11:00 a.m. until then, they have been ordered not to destroy evidence or tamper with witnesses. jack johnson will also have to

wear an electronic monitoring device. armando trull continues the coverage? when jack johnson and his wife woke up this morning, he was one of the most powerful elected officials in the county. his wife about to embark as a new political career as a council member. tonight they are going to bed under a clod of criminal investigations and in a home that has been torn apart by agents trying to send that couple to jail for decades. >> i have made my statement already. >> reporter: prince george's county executive jack johnson arrived at his home around 8:00 friday night, less than an hour after being released from a federal lockup and a u.s. court. >> i'm absolutely convinced without a shadow of a doubt that i am going to be vindicated. >> reporter: friday morning around 11:30 fbi agents arrested johnson and his wife lesli minutes after they were

allegedly overheard on a wire tap discussing how to destroy a $100,000 check. >> he told her to flush the check down the toilet. >> reporter: a plumber was employed to try to find the check. >> i started looking for some evidence. >> reporter: during the rest of the day and afternoon, nearly a dozen fbi and irs agents scoured johnson's home taking away at least 13 boxes of evidence hoping to bolster the case that began in 2006. meanwhile, johnson said he won't step down and will finish out his term. >> i have three weeks to go. and i am going to put all of my efforts into his defense and to take care of the business for the people of prince george's county for the remaining three weeks. >> reporter: derek and anita, it remains to be seen just how effective he can be in these last three weeks. reporting live, i'm armando

trull, back to you. >> thank you. they were also searching their home and executive office. >> and peggy fox continues with that part of the story. >> you have to go back now. >> reporter: prince george's county police officers stopped the media at the door at the executive offices. fbi agents were inside seizing papers and computers for evidence of possible corruption. outside prince george's county said the feds told them nothing. >> they executed a search warrant at the county administration building and since that time the county government has been cooperating fully. >> reporter: the council's communication director says the council's floor was not searched. >> we have not been searched or contacted. >> reporter: johnson's wife lesli who is also charged was elected earlier this month to a seat on the council. in jack johnson's eight years, there has been lots of charges.

earlier this year, a prince george's developer sued saying he had exchanged bribes for a lease at a hotel complex. but law enforcement forces tell 9news now the charges that led them to handcuff johnson and his wife involve another development. a huge project near the greenbelt metro station. two years ago federal agents raided county offices questioning the relationship of the developer of the greenbelt station. still, the spokesmen stood up for his boss. >> he brought a lot of development and a lot of jobs to this county and brought a lot of pride here. jack johnson is not the greet est but one of the greatest -- greatest but one of the greatest politicians there are in the washington region. >> reporter: jack johnson has weeks left in office, but county officials say if he's unable to serve, then a man named howard burnet will take his place. he's the deputy director of health and human services.

>> thank you. to read the full affidavit against jack johnson and his wife lesli, log on to wusa9.com and click on our top stories. new at 11:00, we now know the name of the man killed in northeast dc overnight. police found 29-year-old keith banks in the 1100-block of galloway street at 3:00 this morning. he was shot and he was unconscious. emergency crews rushed him to the hospital but later on he died. well, now dc police are offering a $25,000 reward for anybody with information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. a man suspected of killing five people is being tried in michigan. there was enough evidence for them to go forward. he also faces charges in five other stabbings and another one in ohio. police believe he is connected to a total of 18 stabbings in all three states. a maryland woman is the latest casuality for a popular

drink. she died after crashing her truck into a telephone pole last weekend. she drank at least two cans of a drink before getting behind the wheel. one can has 12% alcohol content, the equivalent of 5-6 beers. >> she changed that night. she was not the same person. she could not remember people's names. she blacked out within 30 minutes of having the alcoholic beverage. >> four loco has been banned where nine college students were rushed to the hospital after drinking the alcoholic energy beverage mix. an update now on the bus fire out on 395. you first saw this story late breaking news at 11:00 last night. a tour bus carrying a group of vietnam vets caught fire right near the 14th street bridge in arlington. those 40 vets had just finished dinner and were headed back to their hotel when their bus started filling up with smoke

and then burst into flames. well, despite the close call, that group wanted to continue their tour of the nation's capitol today, so to help them get around the bus company gave them a bit of an upgrade. it was a limo and also party bus. >> what do you think of your new ride? >> the tin mobile? in dallas, texas, tonight, police are looking for a father who crashed his suv and ran away leaving his kids behind. he slammed into a telephone pole last night. moments later witnesses saw him grab a small child and run. when they came closer to the accident seen, they found five, six and 9-year-old children in the suv. two of the kids suffered serious injuries but all three are expected to survive. caught on tape in ohio, a woman's good deed ends up with her getting dragged down the street. take a look at this. you can see the victim walking in a wal-mart parking lot. and that truck there, the fellow inside asked for directions. unfortunately, as she turns away, he grabs her purse. she gets dragged ten feet on the pavement and she is hurt. in fact, she has a broken

shoulder. so far no arrests either. in jackson, mississippi, a high school basketball coach now being sued for whipping his players. you can hear it. it's the cell phone video now. another student caught him doing it. the players say the coach would use a weight belt to hit them when they mess up. he was also verbally abusive. now the coach has admitted to "paddling" the players. corporal punishment is his way of helping them. you can also be paying an admission fee to get into the smithsonian museum if congress gets its way. they want to cut funding to the smithsonian by 250 million bucks. to make up the cost, visitors can pay $7.50 to get into the 19 museums and the national zoo. congress has tried to charge admission five times since 1986 but failed. a spokesperson for the smithsonian says they will fight to keep the museum free to all.
